How the fee calculator works.
From pledged to paid, in three steps.

  1. 01Failed payments come off first

Backers are charged when the campaign ends, and a few cards fail. The calculator assumes 3%. Kickstarter takes no fee on money it never collects.

  2. 02Kickstarter’s 5%

The platform fee is 5% of what is collected, in every country. If you miss your goal, nobody is charged and there are no fees.

  3. 03Card processing, per pledge

In the US it is 3% + $0.30 on every pledge, or 5% + $0.08 under $10. Rates in other countries are below.

Worked examples.
Same raise, different fees.

$50,000 from 500 backers

Every backer pledges $100. About 3% of payments fail, so $1,500.00 never arrives. Kickstarter’s 5% on the rest is $2,425.00 and card processing is $1,600.50. You keep $44,474.50, and Kickstarter keeps 8.3% of what was collected.

$30,000 from 2,000 backers

Every backer pledges $15. The 5% is the same, but the $0.30 card fee is charged on each of the 1,940 pledges collected, so processing comes to $1,455.00. Kickstarter keeps 10%. Small pledges cost more in fees: price your low tiers with that in mind.

Kickstarter fee questions.

How much does Kickstarter take?

Kickstarter takes 5% of the funds collected, and card processing takes 3% + $0.30 per pledge in the US. Together that is about 8% on a typical pledge: $8.30 of a $100 pledge.

Does Kickstarter take fees if you don’t reach your goal?

No. Kickstarter is all or nothing. If the campaign ends below its goal, no one is charged and there are no fees of any kind.

Why do small pledges pay more in fees?

Part of the card fee is fixed per pledge. A $5 pledge loses 11.6%, a $25 pledge 9.2% and a $100 pledge 8.3%. Pledges under $10 get a lower fixed fee, but a higher percentage.

Do backers pay Kickstarter’s fees?

No. Backers pay their pledge and nothing more. The fees come out of the money Kickstarter pays you.

Does Kickstarter take fees on shipping?

Yes. Shipping charged in the pledge is part of the funds collected, so it pays the 5% and the card fee like the rest. Enter it in advanced mode to see the fees on it.

When does Kickstarter pay you?

The payout is sent 14 days after the campaign ends and usually reaches your bank 3 to 14 business days later. Advanced mode shows the dates for your campaign.

Are these the current Kickstarter fees?

Yes. The rates were read on Kickstarter’s fee page for each country on 20 October 2026. They include the September 2024 increase, from 3% + $0.20 to 3% + $0.30 per US pledge, which many older calculators still miss.
